Why I Stopped Counting Water Glasses (And What I Do Instead)

Why I Stopped Counting Water Glasses (And What I Do Instead)

Let me tell you about the day I face-planted during my morning yoga class. Yep, right there in front of twenty other zen-seeking humans, I completely blacked out during a simple forward fold. The culprit? Chronic dehydration. Talk about a wake-up call! 🌊

Look, I get it. We've all heard the whole "drink 8 glasses a day" thing until we're blue in the face (probably from dehydration, LOL). But here's the tea (or should I say water?) - that advice is about as outdated as my first iPhone.

The Problem with Playing the Numbers Game

Y'all, I used to be that person with the massive water bottle covered in time markers, practically drowning myself to hit some arbitrary goal. But here's the thing - our bodies aren't robots, and they definitely didn't get the memo about these one-size-fits-all guidelines.

Some days I'm crushing HIIT workouts and teaching three swim classes, while other days I'm planted on my couch binge-watching "Succession." Should I really be drinking the same amount of water both days? Spoiler alert: Nope!

Listen Up: Your Body's Actually Pretty Smart

After my embarrassing yoga incident, I started paying attention to what my body was actually telling me. And guess what? It's pretty darn vocal about needing water. Here are some signs I've learned to watch for:

  • That afternoon brain fog that makes you stare at your computer like it's written in hieroglyphics
  • Feeling hangry even though you just ate
  • Muscles cramping during your workout (my personal nemesis)
  • Getting those weird head rushes when you stand up too fast

Making Hydration Actually Fun (Yes, Really!)

Here's where I probably lose all credibility with the wellness police, but whatever. I stopped treating hydration like a chore and started making it something I actually enjoy. Some of my favorite hydration hacks:

  1. I turned it into a game on my phone (yes, I'm that millennial)
  2. I experiment with fancy water combinations like I'm a bougie cocktail bartender
  3. I eat my water through water-rich foods (watermelon is basically nature's Gatorade)

Your Personal Hydration Strategy

Instead of giving you another one-size-fits-all prescription, let's create your own hydration strategy. Ask yourself:

  • What's your typical activity level?
  • Do you live in a humid or dry climate?
  • How much do you sweat? (It's okay, we're all friends here)
  • What's your current relationship with water?

The Experiment

Here's what I want you to try for the next week:

  1. Ditch the counting. Seriously, just stop.
  2. Check your pee color (yeah, I said it). Aim for light lemonade, not apple juice.
  3. Keep water within arm's reach always.
  4. Get creative with your intake - soups, fruits, herbal teas all count!
  5. Notice how you feel. Energy levels, skin, workout performance - it's all connected.

The Bottom Line

Look, I'm not saying to never track your water intake again. But maybe, just maybe, we can stop obsessing over arbitrary numbers and start listening to our bodies instead. They're pretty smart cookies (which, by the way, don't count towards your water intake - sorry!).

Remember my yoga face-plant? These days, I'm nailing those forward folds and teaching others how to stay hydrated without turning it into a second job. Because at the end of the day, hydration shouldn't be something that stresses you out - it should be as natural as, well, water.
